The San Diego County region offers endless opportunities to recreate. Whether your interests lie in dance, exercise, sports, aquatics or outdoor recreation (i.e., hiking), you can experience a health benefit through your participation in the recreational activity of your choice.

Scientific research has proven that regular physical activity reduces people's risk for heart attack, colon cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and may reduce their risk for stroke. Physical activity also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications.

Moreover, physical activity need not be strenuous to be beneficial: people of all ages benefit from moderately intensive physical activity, such as 30 minutes of brisk walking five or more times a week.

This Web site is intended to be a resource for the wealth of programs, services, and facilities, provided by your local park and recreation agency, that will help you to achieve better health and wellness. The site may be navigated by clicking on your specific interest (i.e., hiking trails) or browsing within a specific regional area of the County (i.e., North County).

Goplaygetfit.com is hosted by the Greater San Diego Recreation & Parks Coalition for Health and Wellness, a collaboration of thirteen San Diego area cities and the County of San Diego. The mission of the Coalition is to create healthy communities by advocating parks and recreation as first choice for those seeking physical activity.

The GSDRP Coalition invites you to "Go Play, Get Fit" and to "Live a Healthy Life . . . Recreate."
